Freedom of Religion & Belief, Non-violence & a Culture of Peace

The freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief — Article 18 of the Universal Declaration — realized through the discipline of non-violence.

The right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief, articulated in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is a priority for Dr. Fernández Puyana. Its implementation is best understood in the light of the teachings of non-violence — a philosophy that rejects the use of violent force in relations among individuals, groups, organizations and nation-states. Dr. Puyana plays an active role on this agenda within the United Nations and beyond.
